Wilmslow police crackdown on shoplifters

Thieves in Wilmslow and Handforth are warned to be on their guard as the Neighbourhood Policing Unit cracks down on one of the most common offences – shoplifting.

Inspector Alan Fairclough said "A significant number of shoplifting offences in our town are committed by a small number of 'prolific' thieves – a proportion of whom steal to fund a drug or alcohol habit. Our objective is to reduce shoplifting crimes by targeting our efforts toward this recognised group of offenders and to bring them to justice for their actions and the associated drain on police resources and time. Where appropriate, and in conjunction with our partner agencies, we will refer those in need of support for drink or drug addictions for help with their addictions to help rehabilitate them and deter them from a life of crime."

Shoplifting is sometimes considered to be a 'petty' crime but has a significant impact on the local community, policing resources, retailers, and the local economy.

Community Sergeant Andy Miller said "We will have a highly visible policing presence in Wilmslow and Handforth over the coming weeks and we urge retailers to speak to our officers whilst out on patrol to discuss security issues that are relevant to them. 'Target Hardening' advice will be offered to retail premises that are considered to be vulnerable, and those stores that historically have suffered the highest number of shoplifting offences will be advised on how best to protect their stock and deter would-be offenders."

Anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour, particularly around busy retail parks or anyone who is offered anything for sale that does not appear to be legitimate, should contact Cheshire Police on 101.
