Piano festival gets off to a polished start

PIANOFEST

The piano festival at St Bartholomew's Church got off to a fantastic start on Saturday, 14th February, when Polish born pianist Ewa Tytman, a postgraduate student at the Royal Northern College of Music, presented a varied programme of music by fellow countryman Frederic Chopin.

Organist Philip Underwood said "Chopin's music shows his strong sympathies with the country of his birth in the dark days of its oppression in the early 19th century. His music is by turns defiant, proud and graceful. It calls for a flawless technique and rich emotional response in the performer and Ewa was more than equal to the challenge."

Amongst the highlights of her recital were the first 12 of Chopin's Preludes Op.28 and his Fantasy in Fminor Op.49.

Philip added "We were delighted to welcome many new faces amongst the attentive audience who rewarded Ewa with a well deserved ovation at the end of her recital."

The next recital in the series will be held on Saturday 21st February with a performance from Rachel Fok. Having completed her undergraduate degree at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2014 under the tutelage of John Gough, Rachel is now working towards a Master's degree at the same institution, where she has been awarded a music scholarship to study with Helen Krizos.

Rachel has won a number of national and international competitions including the Euterpe Piano Competition in Italy, West London Piano Festival and East London Music Festival.

The recital will start at 2pm. Admission is £4 and all proceeds will of go to the Oscar the Organ Appeal.

This was a really enjoyable event, which was well attended. The next one promises to be just as good. Definately worth an hour of anyone's time.
