Clothing chain to close Wilmslow store after 10 years

m&co

A women's clothes shop is preparing to close after almost 10 years of trading in the town centre.

M & Co. have decided not to renew their lease so will close their Grove Street shop on January 31st.

Having opened their first stores under the Mackays brand 50 years ago, the chain has expanded to almost 300 stores, the nearest of which will be in Congleton and Marple.

Sad that they are going. It has been a popular and affordable clothes shop in Wilmslow with lovely, helpful staff!

Mutter is that a recently avail Grove St retail lease has been acquired by a Pound Shop enterprise.
Opinions?

The pound shops becoming part of Wilmslows high street offer is only a matter of time and I have no doubt they will be used and be a success.
Can't believe we have no Aldi yet!!

Dave - any business willing to take on a commercial property lease with the ridiculous rent and rates should be applauded!

Sad to see this shop go, the staff in this shop are friendly and happy. No doubt to be replaced with either another coffee shop or charity shop. The council need to start reducing rents and rates to keep the shops open that people want to shop at rather than make it a town full of coffee shops and even more empty shop fronts.

We are the Knightsbridge of the North*.
If these retail chains can't afford to service our Knightsbridge-minded public with our premium rents and rates, then they don't deserve to be here.

*Well, that's what they said in the 1980s.

Another one bites the dust. How many of our retailers are "hanging on" and would love to walk away but can't because of their onerous leases? Maybe the public have finally realised where the cash spent in a prime retail unit goes. Plenty into Pete's pocket plus all the other greedy landlords and of course trying to fill the pockets of local and national government. The graspers have has it too good for too long and greed is killing the golden goose.
