Wilmslow mum's hair raising charity challenge

A charitable Wilmslow mum has had her hair chopped this week to raise money for three charities that look after the young and vulnerable.

Katy Barber, of Tarporley Walk, had her hip length hair cut into a bob at Heritage Hair in Macclesfield on Monday, 6th October.

The mum of one who works as a petrol supervisor is donating her locks to the wig-making charity Little Princess Trust as well as fund raising for them, The Christie's Teenage and Young Adult Unit (formerly known as the young oncology unit) and St Mary's Neonatal Intensive Care.

Katy is keen to raise awareness of childhood cancers and women who have to give birth prematurely in order to start cancer treatment.

She said "My son Harry was born in 2011 with a congenital birth defect called oesophageal atresia - food tube not joined to the stomach. He spent 12 weeks on NICU and endured a 7 hour operation to move the stomach into the chest. I regularly fund raise for the unit and I'm now also a volunteer. Over the last 3 years I have heard many stories of how families have found themselves on the unit from spontaneous prematurity, birth defects and finally - having to have their baby early in order to start their treatment against cancer.

"My aim from this event is to not only help teenagers, young adults, young children and babies - it's to help their family - there is nothing more distressing than not being able to comfort the one you love so I hope the funds raised will help provide some comfort - improvements to units like the Christie and St Mary's or simply being able to provide a wig for a little prince or princess to feel a little happier about themselves."

Speaking about her new hair style, Katy said "So far I'm enjoying my new style, compliments from my family and friends have helped of course. I'm thankful to everyone who has donated, family, friends, work colleagues and customers of heritage hair and proud of the work Charlotte has done in transforming my hair."

Katy is unsure of the exact funds she has raised so far but she has a target of raising £10,000 for St Mary's NICU in ten years.
