For the past two years, Incredible Edible Wilmslow has entered the 'Britain In Bloom' competition, with the support of business and council and has won the Silver Award each time.

This year, the town's entry is stepping up a gear and the Wilmslow In Bloom Committee has grown to include several members from Wilmslow Town Council, business partners from across town and representatives from Friends of the Carrs and Rotary with a view to improving on the Silver Award.

The 'Britain in Bloom' movement is 50 years old this year and is proposing a 'Growing for Gold' theme for participating towns to adopt.

Council funded troughs and planters will adopt the 'Gold' theme using shades of yellow, orange and red whilst Incredible Edible will also use this colour scheme for their beds and borders with yellow and orange varieties of herbs, fruit and vegetables such as lemon thyme, tomatoes, peppers and courgette.

Helen Yates of Incredible Edible said ''Where previously, plots have been planted randomly, this year, we are aiming for a more structured planting scheme and will be working closely with Turners Nursery to get the plots looking their potential best.

''We are keen to involve more businesses in the golden edible planting too, last year 36 businesses dressed their premise fronts and we'd love more this year to get a real sense of every-one working together.''

Wilmslow Town Council has already invited local businesses to nominate sites on which new or re-cycled hanging baskets could add to the floral impact of the theme.

Cllr Ellie Brooks encouraged as many parties across town to join in with the Growing for Gold theme by adding, ''Wilmslow Town Council invites residents, businesses, community groups and others to join in, to decorate our town in an imaginative festive of colourful planting,''

Geoff Shelmerdine, member of Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club and organiser of the annual Scarecrow Festival said; "We are pleased to be part of this new initiative and look forward to seeing increased support from local businesses and a legion of gold lam'e festooned scarecrows across town."
