Clean Team bag a load of rubbish

The recently formed Wilmslow Clean Team held their first litter picks earlier this month to help keep the town clean.

Twelve volunteers helped clear litter from Grove Street, Water Lane, Library and Leisure Centre on Wednesday 4th and Saturday 7th December.

Vickie Riley, who is heading up the voluntary group, said "For our first official litter picking session, we feel the attendance was good and a lot was achieved in respect to the amount of litter collected. A number of passers by were interested in the group and enquired about what was happening and why. Some members of the public believed the Council should be picking up our litter, however, as a group we recognise that the Council is not entirely responsible for the litter we collectively drop, whether on purpose or by mistake.

"The group will continue to collect up litter and try to raise awareness of the problems of dropping litter, so that perhaps in the future, the litter will not be dropped in the first place. The group is becoming increasingly involved with the local schools, businesses and Guides association and it is hoped that some positive outcomes can be gained by working together in 2014."

People are very welcome to join the group whose next litter picking sessions will take place on Wednesday 8th and Saturday 11th January, from 10am to 12 noon. They will meet at Bank Square in Wilmslow and all equipment and instructions will be provided.

Well done to these wonderful volunteers who are giving up their precious time. What a shame they are needed in the first place because of lazy, inconsiderate people.
