Warning over spate of phone thefts

Police are asking residents to be vigilant again after a recent spate of iPhone thefts.

A male and female working together distracted a customer at Bar Sport in Wilmslow on Saturday, 9th November and stole his iPhone.

This is one of at least five similar crimes that this male and female have committed across the county in the last week.

The couple are described as being in their twenties, olive skinned with a foreign accent, possible French in origin. They are also thought to be using a Blue Ford Mondeo Estate with foreign registration plates.

They tend to target bars and restaurants and ask customers for directions whilst placing maps over mobile phones left on the customers table. When they remove the maps they also remove the mobile phone in the process and this is often unnoticed for a few minutes, enabling them to make their escape.

Sgt Andy Miller of Wilmslow Neighbourhood Policing Team said "We would appeal to all local residents to be mindful of this tactic and report any suspicious behaviour to the Police immediately. This method of stealing iPhones is being used all over the country by travelling criminals."

This is a sad reflection of today's society that people have to have their mobile phones on and in front of them all the time (not saying that the customer deserved to have his phone stolen).

Let this be a lesson that everyone should download a tracker to their phone. I hope the police have resources to track it.
