Members from Wilmslow RUFC and Mersey Forest came together for a planting ceremony at the club this VE Day to commemorate the passing of 80 years since the end of the Second World War.
They had the honour of meeting veterans from the local community and planting six oak trees on their grounds as part of the Oaks at 80 project, which commemorates this anniversary by planting oak trees - a symbol of strength, resilience and longevity.
Led by The Mersey Forest with support from local communities, schools and councils, the initiative was launched a lasting tribute to those who lived through the war while also enhancing our environment for future generations.
Ric Noden, Chair of Wilmslow Rugby Club, said: "We were delighted to be asked to get involved in the 'Oaks at 80' tree planting initiative and ultimately to host a special group of ex-servicemen on this very special day. Hopefully our oak trees will thrive and flourish pitch side at the Memorial Ground."
Paul Nolan, Director of the Mersey Forest, said: "Oaks at 80 is about remembering the past and planting for the future. By coming together to plant trees, we not only honour the sacrifices of those who lived through World War II but also create a long-lasting commemoration, that will benefit our communities and environment for generations to come.
