New planters help make Wilmslow bloom

Wilmslow Town Council has now officially taken over the planting and maintenance of floral planters in and around the Town Centre.

They took the decision to take on the responsibility for planters when Cheshire East Council budgets prevented them from being able to continue this non statutory service. In taking on the service the Town Council decided that it could make significant improvements to the service provided for many years by Cheshire East Council and before that Macclesfield Borough Council.

In particular, through its Community and Order Committee, they felt that more planting was required, that this should be located in highly visible locations, that the quality and variety of planting could be improved and that the frequency of maintenance was critical. In tackling these matters the Town Council has invested £7800 in self watering barrier planters and additional town centre tiered planters in the first year.

The new tiered planters have been introduced along Water Lane and Alderley Road with the barrier planters being introduced from the A34 roundabout at Manchester Road and running into the town centre. The Town Council has also invested in a watering bowser to improve maintenance and reduce long term costs.

Cllr Keith Purdom, Chairman, Wilmslow Town Council, said "We sincerely hope that people will notice and appreciate not only the retention but also the significant enhancement of the new planting.

"The work of the Community and Order Committee and in particular Cllr Sue Menlove in getting us to this point is to be applauded. From the comments that I have already received, the investment in the first year and the quality of the planting is getting noticed and helping to make our town a more appealing place for all."

All the planters look stunning, especially those by the roundabout near the church. Can we now not have all the advertising on the railings, which was beginning to look out of place?
Thank you for all the effort that has gone into this.

A really good initiative! Those on Alderley Road are particularly effective.

The planters are stunning. I do hope that there are no dissenters because they really do lift the spirits. Well done to all those who worked so hard planting the displays, brilliant.

The planters look great, very colourful, I just hope that they are maintained as I noticed the tier planters outside Greggs and along Grove St look a little tired and had lots of weeds growing around them (apologies if this has been rectified I have not been down there today). I am with Anna with regards to the advertising on the railings, it looks awful, please remove them.

So far a positive response from Wilmslow residents. I would suggest they can participate further in future, by removing rubbish, (cans & wrappers) from planters to waste bins as they pass and not use planters as ashtrays. Some of the planters may be suitable for strawberry plants (Incredible edible contribution?) and next year could contain a wild -flower mix to defray cost of seasonal nursery bedding plants.
AFAIK, roundabout advertising currently requires permission from CEC (the Highways/Planning Auth), not WTC.

Yes, they look great, it might be best if you don't park on double yellow lines when watering though. Do it early in the morning or late in the evening.

Hurrah. A news story the whole community supports. That must be a first!
