Footballers to reunite after 25 years

Wilmslow Sports Community Football Club is organising a reunion football match for the team which won the Cheshire Cup in 1988.

A 25 year reunion game will be played on 18th May at Upcast Lane and organisers are keen to get in contact with as many players from the 1988 U16s team as possible.

The team all played for Wilmslow Sports Junior Football Club from the age of 12 to 17 and peaked at the under-16 level when they won a few trophies.

The majority of them went to Wilmslow High School with a few from Manchester Grammar and Stockport Grammar.

Treasurer Matt Quellin explained "One of the players, Rick Shenton, moved to Australia years ago and is bringing his family over for their first visit so we thought it would be good to get everyone together again.

"As well as that we're getting the ex-players from other local Saturday and Sunday teams that Rick used to play for, such as Alderley St Phillips and Alderley Morley, in the late 1980s and 1990s to make up the rest of the team and opposition."

James Hoyle added "We have made contact with all of the ex-players of our team and the majority are up for meeting up, kicking a ball about, realising that we are no longer 16, a few beers and a bit of reminiscing.

"Also, all our old managers are also up for coming down and hopefully together we can get a few more lads from other teams to take us on. If we can also raise some funds for the club then great."

The match will take place on Saturday 18th May, kick off is 2pm at the Wilmslow Sports home pitch at Upcast Lane.
