Wilmslow Town Council has decided to purchase some new swings for a park off Gravel Lane much to the delight of local children and their parents.

Councillors agreed at this week's meeting to allocate £5,500 from this year's reserves budget to enable them to purchase replacements swings for The Temp, after Cheshire East Council removed the existing swings.

Councillors will fund the purchase on the understanding that alternative quotations will be obtained and all liabilities associated with this equipment will lie with Cheshire East Council.

Parents and children were annoyed and upset to discover that the swings, which they considered to be well-used, had been removed from The Temp during the summer holidays - without any warning.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson explained "The swings, which were the only items of play equipment at The Temp, were beginning to fall into a state of disrepair and at the end of their life. Following the most recent regular maintenance and safety inspection, a decision was made to remove them.

"Last year, approximately £50,000 of funding was invested into the refurbishment and provision of new additional equipment at the site on South Oak Lane which is just a few minutes' walk away and very popular with a variety of age ranges."

Bethan Crook, of Eden Close, said "My children were absolutely delighted when I told them that the swings at the Temp were coming back. We are so grateful to Wilmslow Town Council for listening to the community and responding in such a positive way. I look forward to my children spending many happy hours on the new swings."

Her daughter Naomi Crook, age 8, added "It's brilliant that we are getting new swings. I can't wait to use them!"

Sarah Price, mum to James (5) and Alex (3), commented "It's wonderful that new swings will be re-instated in the Temp - my children are so happy and excited.

"The Council have listened to the views of the local community, and its been great that we have all worked together and achieved such a positive outcome. A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved."

James Price added "I can't wait to play on the new swings!"

Emma Stansfield, who campaigned for the swings to be replaced, said "What fantastic news just before Christmas. The children are looking forward to them being replaced as soon as possible - hopefully for when the sun starts shining again!"

Helen Hendry mum of Emily and Joseph, who used the swings most days, added "Absolutely fantastic news. Just what we wanted. The children will be delighted."

The "Stockton/ Chesham Road" play area Stuart refers to used to have swings, a slide, and seat for parents to get a well-earned sit down when my girls were little, and they loved it.
