Residents pay their respects to popular coach

Wilmslow residents gathered at Lindow St Johns Church on Wednesday, 3rd October, to say farewell to Ken Sawyer, a well-known figure in local football and amateur dramatic circles who died peacefully at home on 21st September aged 87.

Liverpool-born Ken moved to Wilmslow in 1969 where he coached the 1st Lindow St John's Cubs football team for 30 years - finally stepping down in 2011 due to declining health.

As well as achieving many successes on the field Ken ensured that boys of all abilities had the opportunity to participate in the game he loved.

Until oesophageal cancer curtailed his acting in 1985, he was an active member of the Wilmslow Green Room, his personal highlight was playing the lead role of Shylock in a production of The Merchant of Venice at Gawsworth Hall Open Air Theatre.

Ken continued to work as a freeelance chartered surveyor until shortly before his death.

A collection was held, care of Albert Slack Funeral Directors, for Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

His son Rob said: "It was wonderful to see so many people at the Church to celebrate Dad's life and recognise his contribution to the local community."

He leaves his wife Joan, children Louise and Rob and three grandchildren: Joe, Sian and Ceri.
