Firefighters pump out flood water from Beech Grove

Firefighters spent several hours pumping water from Beech Grove this week to try and prevent it from getting into the homes nearby.

Unfortunately this is a recurring problem for the residents following heavy rain.

Ric Roberts, who lives nearby on Alma Lane, told wilmslow.co.uk "It's been happening, with varying degrees of severity, since I first moved here in 2010, and I've been reporting it to the council every time it occurs.

"My wife and I phoned Cheshire Highways a couple of times in the afternoon, to ask for the drains to be pumped. We've taken this course of action on numerous occasions over the years, and normally they send out a pumping tanker with a team of men after a few hours to pump the excess water away.

"On this occasion, someone from the council did eventually attend in the early evening but they only supplied sandbags and told my neighbour on Beech Grove that they wouldn't pump it."

At approximately 8pm on Tuesday, 25th September, water was flowing into one resident's garage and into the air bricks under his house, so he asked the fire service to assist.

Ric commented "The firemen were very helpful and pumped the water for a few hours into a free flowing drain on Alma Lane, by running their hose through my property. This didn't clear the problem completely, but reduced the level by a few inches."

Residents of Beech Grove have apparently written to councillors on several occasions about the flooding and Mr Roberts received a letter from Cheshire East Building Control this week saying that a drainage survey has been organised for next week.

Ric added "Every time it rains heavily about half of Beech Grove becomes submerged. My garden gates and fence are rotting and warping and the foot of my garden is constantly waterlogged. Homes on Beech Grove, which are a few feet lower than mine, are suffering more severe damage, and it is my understanding that some have electrical and damp problems as a result of the water.

"We normally park our car on Beech Grove, behind our gates, as there's very limited parking on Alma Lane. We have a baby and a toddler and have had to wade through deep water with them to get to our car. Additionally, the repeated flooding is causing the road surface on Beech Grove to break up badly."
