Fire Station is recruiting on-call firefighters

Wilmslow Fire Station is looking to recruit on-call firefighters to work part time at its station.

They are holding a special open event for anyone interested on Thursday, 7th June, from 2pm until 7.30pm at the Fire Station on Altrincham Road.

People will be on hand to give information and advice on what it takes to be a firefighter with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service which is looking to employ a number of part-time on-call firefighters.

Anyone over 18 years old, who lives or works within five minutes of the station, can apply.

Paul Hancock, Cheshire Fire and Rescue's Chief Fire Officer, said: "Working with the fire and rescue service is a thoroughly rewarding experience. It gives individuals the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds and meet people in the community."

The staff who are recruited will work on an on-call duty system at Wilmslow Fire Station providing cover by using pagers to alert them to incidents and they will have the same level of training as full time firefighters.

On average on-call firefighters are called out two or three times a week and attend a drill session for a couple of hours a week. They can earn in the region of £5,000 per annum.

On-call firefighters come from all walks of life, including: shopkeepers, stay at home mums, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, company directors and people who may not currently be employed who work alongside their full-time colleagues.

Firefighters are involved in a wide variety of situations as well as fighting fires, such as floods, road accidents, chemical spills and attending community events.

People who apply must be able to respond quickly to the fire station, have a real wish to support their local community, have an enthusiasm and willingness to work in a team environment, and have a reasonable level of fitness.

If you would like more information, even if you cannot attend the open session please call the station on 01625 524 066 or visit http://www.cheshirefire.gov.uk/.
