Handforth station gets a tidy up

Handforth Tidy Up - Guides

Handforth station is on track for a wonderful summer thanks to the efforts of the local community who came together for a tidy up event.

Friends of Handforth Station members along with local residents and Handforth Guides tidied, weeded and litter-picked in anticipation of Jubilee and Olympic celebrations. Rotary also carried out maintenance work on their award winning sculpture garden and Transition Wilmslow planted new herbs.

Julia Dean, Guide Leader, said: "Some Guides from 1st Dean Row came down to carry on our preparation work on our new garden. It was fantastic to see the fruit tree we planted last year in blossom".

Mike Bishop, Chairman of Friends of Handforth Station, said: "It is always wonderful to seek Handforth people coming together to make the station a gateway to Handforth that we can all be proud of. The Guides' work on their new station garden has been impressive and we look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour later this year".

The Friends of the station are also celebrating receiving a grant from Handforth Parish Council towards various small projects including installing plaque to commemorate the Prince of Wales' visit in 2010 and the creation of a new flag.

As a community we should be proud of the work done at Handforth Station.

But there is a big however, Northern Rail appear not to see it this was. For those with mobility problems, with a pushchair or bike the station is a nightmare and in some cases impossible to use with its many steps. The station is in need of a ramp on the eastern side and direct access on the western side from Southacre Drive. Given the massive works that have been done to the southward platform at Heald Green, which already had a ramp, one does wonder about Northern Rail's priority.

Handforth also needs more evening trains. There is a easy solution after 18:00 when we are left with one each hour and that is for the Ariva Manchester to South Wales trains to stop at Handforth, this would give 3 extra trains in the evening. Handforth is extremely poorly served by public transport with only two buses going north off-peak and only then as far as Parrs Wood.
