Works to widen the pavement along Church Street in Wilmslow will begin on Monday, 14th May.
There should be minimum disruption caused as the road will not be closed off, instead there will be two-way traffic lights to keep traffic flowing.
As part of the project, the Council intends to install drop kerbs and 'dimpled paving' to assist people with disabilities.
The funding of approximately £5,000 has come from a Section 106 Agreement and follows an increase in foot flow in the area.
Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "I share the relief of local residents that Church Street will not be closed off and that the use of detours will be avoided.
"I must express my thanks to the highways staff for rescheduling the various stages of the works to minimise disruption to residents."
Once the work to widen the pavements on Church Street has been carried out, data will be collected to allow Cheshire East Council to understand which of the alternative locations people feel most comfortable using to cross this road.
This data will then be used to prioritise repairs to the road and it is also hoped that all the necessary paperwork can be finalised to enable works on the proposed new zebra crossing to be completed in June.

Here's what readers have had to say so far. Why not add your thoughts below.
Public consultation for a single pedestrian crossing ended 2 weeks ago, yet CEC seem intent to install additional dropped kerbs along Church St, to facilitate pedestrians crossing, which will further limit parking availabilty as parking alongside a 'DK' will attract a PCN penalty, even without yellow line restrictions & lead to pedestrians of all ages still emerging from between parked vehicles. The existing taxi bays will impinge on the formal crossing limits and need re-locating to existing normal parking bays.
"Once the work to widen the pavements on Church Street has been carried out, data will be collected to allow Cheshire East Council to understand which of the alternative locations people feel most comfortable using to cross this road."
Does this mean that some of the newly installed crossing points will be removed? I doubt it!
