Plans progress for town sculptures

Plans to have a collection of wooden fruit and vegetable sculptures installed around the town centre are moving forward.

The scheme, which is the idea of Incredible Edible, has been supported by Wilmslow Town Council.

Cllr Ellie Brooks has taken a walk around the town centre with Incredible Edible to look at potential sites including one at the station.

Speaking at this week's town council meeting, Cllr Brooks said "They are going to put an apple at the station so we thought we'd follow the English fruit theme and go for a pear.

"The site we are looking at is outside Wildings (on Alderley Road) because a lot of people will see it there and we are looking at coupling it with a pear tree. Diane Smith (Town Centre Manager) is looking at planning issues."

Richard Christopherson, LAP Manager for Wilmslow, confirmed that the sculpture at the station will be jointly funded with Northern Rail.

Helen Yates, who launched Incredible Edible Wilmslow in November 2010, told wilmslow.co.uk "The idea of the sculptures is to give Wilmslow a new identity around food.

"We have such wonderful farmshops, bars, cafes and restaurants around town and with the arrival of the Artisan Market and Incredible Edible plots, we are already making a tourist pull around great food.

"The sculptures will be an extension of that, to help to increase footfall into the town for all businesses to benefit from."
