Victorian Christmas at the Mill

Victorian Christmas tales at Quarry Bank Mill' c National Trust & Emma Williams

The clock is going back to Victorian times at Quarry Bank Mill this Christmas on two weekends in December.

Chat to characters from Quarry Bank's Victorian past and find out what Christmas was like in the beautifully trimmed Apprentice House. While local school choirs, a brass band and Victorian organist will provide seasonal music.

A huge Christmas tree in the Mill Yard, along with mulled wine, hot chestnuts and gingerbread will add to the festive atmosphere, whilst Father Christmas will be waiting to meet younger visitors in his Victorian grotto.

Spare a thought however for the Victorian child labourers who worked at the Mill. At Christmas their only gift would have been be a sugar mouse from the Mill Manager.

At the Mill's Victorian Apprentice House, visit the 'doctor' to hear about the medical treatments available in winter time to treat coughs and colds; find out what rich and poor people would have eaten during the festive season - and tuck into mulled wine and an Apprentice Current Loaf, or try some of the parlour games which the Victorian Apprentices would have played on Christmas Day.

A Victorian Christmas at the Mill will take place on December 10th and 11th and again on December 17th and 18th from 11am to 3pm.

One of my favourite haunts. Walking through the bluebell wood to the Mill from the Carrs.

I hear that the hidden garden has now been fully restored.

Pity that Styal Prison is so close. It is just a blight on the local area, as all all our prisons.
