George Osborne visits incredible local project

The Chancellor of the Exchequer was in town this morning to meet up with the Incredible Edible team of volunteers.

George Osborne met with Helen Yates, who launched Incredible Edible in November 2010, to have a walk through Wilmslow and see the work they have been doing.

They started at Waitrose, where the circular planter outside the entrance to the store is being maintained by Incredible volunteers with a selection of fragrant smelling herbs which local residents can help themselves to.

Helen and George Osborne then walked to the Romany Caravan where they were greeted by a whole host of volunteers who have come together to start growing their own, to share knowledge, swap seeds, and reduce their carbon footprint.

Helen said "I invited our MP George Osborne to come and have a look at what is going on in his town.

"The idea is that we can unite the community through local food. We aim to change the look and feel of the town and bring people together. Growing your own is not only a great way to save money and have a constant supply of fresh produce but there is also an environmental aspect because you cut food miles and the use of plastic containers."

After being presented with a bag of full of local produce, including freshly baked bread, eggs, preserves and pate, George Osborne said "This is a fantastic initiative that is already brightening up the town centre of Wilmslow.

"Huge congratulations to all the volunteers, local businesses and the local councils for making it happen. I always knew that Wilmslow was a good place to come and eat!!"

Helen added "I really just want to thank everyone, everyone has been fantastic. The whole point of Incredible Edible is to bring the community together and today is just the beginning."
