Unsung sporting heroes from Wilmslow were amongst those from across Cheshire East to be recognised for their efforts at a recent awards ceremony.

Matthew Nottingham from Wilmslow was awarded Young Sports Achiever of the Year.

Matthew has made it into the GB badminton squad and was also the Badminton England Player of the Month for July 2010. He trains 5 days a week, competes all over Europe most weekends and having taken his Level 1 coaching award, he also coaches for the Cheshire Cell.

Zoe Perera from Wilmslow Lightning Netball Club was runner up in the Young Volunteer of the Year category.

Zoe, who is on the Step into Sport and Young Ambassador Programmes, acts as manager and coach, as well as sitting on the committee and refereeing for the local netball club. She has also been accepted for work placement at LOCOG by Paul Deighton due to the great presentation she delivered at the embrace the games conference.

It was the very first combined Cheshire East Sports Awards in which the work of local volunteers, clubs, coaches and schools in developing sport was recognised. Around 150 people attended the event, hosted by BBC Radio Manchester presenter Mike Shaft and the awards were presented by the Mayor of Cheshire East Council, Councillor Gordon Baxendale.
