Cheshire East Council has signed up to a pledge written entirely by children in their care.
Ten cared-for children, who have formed Cheshire East’s children-in-care council, drew up a pledge which outlines the standards of care they expect.
Issues covered include a promise not to move children to different schools unless it is absolutely necessary, especially in their GCSE year and they also asked to be told in advance of any changes to their care.
The Care Matters White Paper published in 2007 wanted to make sure that children in care would have the same opportunities in life as their peers – a good education, good health care and consistent support and advice.
Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, said: “This pledge shows how seriously Cheshire East Council takes the welfare of children in care. There is no reason why cared-for children should have their prospects limited, they have told us what they expect and we have listened.
“Children in the care of Cheshire East Council should see this pledge as a sign of our commitment to them.”
