Crowds turnout in Handforth for a weekend of VE80 celebrations

Handforth Town Council were in awe of the turnout to both of their VE80 anniversary events held in Handforth over the last weekend.

Firstly on May 8th at 9:30pm crowds formed at the Handforth War Memorial to light the lamp of peace whilst the Rev Richard Reeve gave a general service outlining the meaning behind VE80 and the End of the World War II in Europe, this was followed by prayers of thanks. The Handforth Girl Guides and Brownies also attended with special VE80 tealight jars which were lit along with the lamp of peace.

The following day a huge celebration for VE80 was held at Handforth Community & Youth Centre where 40's music played in the main hall whilst the sun shone outside on the crowds enjoying fish and chips, a number of stall and children's activities.

The Saturday VE80 celebration was organised by both Handforth Town Council and the NAFFI Break CIC veterans group.

Cllr Gianna Edwards-Beech, Handforth Town Councillor & founder of the NAFFI Break, Handforth, said "It was lovely to see the community come together and to remember, and celebrate such a commemorative event that ended the War in Europe. A big thank you to all those who attended and the Town Councillors and Clerk for all their hard work in the lead up to the event."

Cllr Susan Moore, Chair of Handforth Town Council said "What a wonderful community event, I thank everyone who turned out on the day and for all the hard work and dedication of the councillors and volunteers who made the day such a success."
