Long-standing Wilmslow Manor resident, John Renshaw, together with his family, are hosting an art exhibition at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, on Wellington Road South.
The exhibition, presented by the Renshaw family in close partnership with the University of Chester, where John was a long serving senior lecturer, Head of Department and Professor Emeritus, and hosted by Stockport Council, will take place from 5th April until 18th May.
Working with the art gallery, the university and the Council, the wellbeing team at Wilmslow Manor managed to secure a six week period for John’s most loved pieces to be showed and honoured, with the exhibition aptly named John Renshaw: A Retrospective.
John, aged 78, has been a resident at Wilmslow Manor for almost two years. Born and raised in Macclesfield, John’s artistic journey began at Stockport College where his foundation course played a crucial role in shaping his career ambitions. Inspired and motivated by his tutors, John was encouraged to pursue his passion for art, later returning to Stockport College as a full-time tutor.
John enjoyed an active artistic career and was renowned for his painting and drawing. He is a distinguished figure in the art world and has made significant contributions to the field of painting. His work is characterised by its profound depth, intricate detail, and emotional resonance.
His time as a lecturer at the University of Chester saw him nurture the next generation of artists and his influence extended beyond the classroom, with John playing a pivotal role in shaping the creative landscape of the University and the broader community.
Anna Lomas, John’s daughter, says: “Dad’s love of painting, teaching and talking about art is all consuming. He is immensely proud of his career in this field and making a difference to those he worked with. Now dad has Alzheimer’s. He remembers very little but his passion for art, painting, drawing and literature is one thing he has not forgotten. We have chosen to show his work now so he can share his love with the public and be present to see how much it is appreciated.”
Sarah Jo Wild, Wellbeing Co-ordinator at Wilmslow Manor, adds: “It’s wonderful that some of John’s work is being shown at the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery. He is incredibly talented and I’m thrilled the team at Wilmslow Manor were able to assist with this special exhibition, allowing the public to view a selection of John’s paintings.”
