Plans confirmed to commemorate VE Day 80 in Wilmslow

Plans have been confirmed to help residents commemorate VE Day 80 in May 2025.

On Saturday 10th May, on Grove Street, there will be live music from vintage dance band and swing sensation, Debonaires.

The Cheshire-based band, which has been variously described as a dance band, vintage function band, swing band, 'little' big band and vintage dance orchestra, will bring the VE day atmosphere to Wilmslow town centre with performances between 12.30pm and 4pm.

Wilmslow Town Council is offering grants of £50 to help groups of Wilmslow residents to organise local neighbourhood community events to mark VE Day 80.

The grants are for occasions such as street events taking place between 3rd and 11th May 2025, to purchase items such as bunting, tablecloths, paper plates, hats and signage.

There are 50 grants available in total, allocated on a first come, first served basis. The closing date for applications will be 23rd April 2025. The full VE Day 80 Grant scheme criteria and application form can be found online.

Wilmslow Town Mayor, Councillor Tim Higgins, said, "It is important to mark the significant anniversary of 80 years since the Second World War came to an end in Europe – when spontaneous celebrations broke out across the nation after the long-anticipated news.

"VE Day 80 is a time for communities to come together to commemorate the VE Day generation – especially those that served. We hope that we can help the Wilmslow community do this through an afternoon of vintage live music on Grove Street and grants to support neighbourhood events."
