Lloyds Banking Group haas announced they will be closing 136 branches – 61 Lloyds, 61 Halifax and 14 Bank of Scotland branches – between May 2025 and March 2026.

The Halifax branch on Grove Street in Wilmslow is amongst those closing, the closing date is May 19th 2025.

On average, transactions in these 136 branches have reduced by 48% (and up to 73%) in the last five years. Across all our branches, there were ten million fewer in-branch transactions in 2024 compared to 2023.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: "Over 20 million customers are using our apps for on-demand access to their money and customers have more choice and flexibility than ever for their day-to-day banking.

"Alongside our apps, customers can also use telephone banking, visit a Community Banker or use any Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland branch, giving access to many more branches. Customers can also do their everyday banking at over 11,000 branches of the Post Office or in a Banking Hub."

The company is introducing a Community Banker in Wilmslow who will provide face to face services to customers in their local communities, including making payments, account enquiries and online banking support.

All members of staff who work at these branches will be offered a role at another branch or in another part of our business.

This follows the announcement that NatWest will close their Wilmslow branch on 20th May 2025.

Don't worry, customers can "use any Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland branch" (apart from the fact they've already been closed). Expect the site to be replaced by another take away or Turkish barber or both.

Now that would be good but what we really need is a Turkish barber where you can get a coffee and Mücver; browse some properties for sale and get your nails painted at the same time.

Soon, Wilmslow as with many other large UK towns, banks in one sense will be no more. However fear not because actually banks will be with us locally for the long term. For starters there are the River Bollin banks often tree lined with bank branches & along which exists some sandbanks. One day, the river might even be inhabited by a bank of swans or even a bank of beavers. Open 24 hours a day, up above, cloud banks can frequently be found. In times of urgent medical backup needs nursing banks can be tapped & when necessary mobilising blood banks to assist with their services. The town is rife with banks of closed circuit cameras with Big Brother watching over via a bank of monitors with blackout standby power from banks of batteries. So banks are here to stay you can bank on it

On a serious note - there are a lot of older people who rely on face-to-face banking. The technology should be there for a single banking hub in Wilmslow that could be used by all the banks. Sharing the cost would surely make a hub viable.
