In a first for the north west, Cheshire East Council has a Youth Mayor, 15 year old Chris Edwards.
The Youth Mayor's role is to work in the interest of Cheshire East’s younger residents, bridge the gap between youth councils and Cheshire East Council and improve the image of young people. The Youth Mayor participates in various activities with the Mayor, and his two deputies, Jack Victor and Gareth Ikin, to achieve these aims.
The Cheshire East Youth Mayor Team are keen to tap into the views and aspirations of young people living in Cheshire East and would like to hear their views on what it's like growing up in the area. An online survey has been set up to capture the comments of young people aged between 11-19 years-old across Cheshire East.
The responses will be discussed at a Youth Conference in early June and presented to the Council’s senior managers and Councillors so that young people’s views can be heard and acted upon. The anonymous survey will only take four or five minutes to complete.
Chris Edwards, Cheshire East’s first Youth Mayor, said: “I hope as many young people as possible can take part as we really want to hear your views on what’s good and what’s bad about growing up in Cheshire East and the services the Council provides.
“We would also like views on whether a Youth Council should be set up to represent young people and to review Council decisions and policies that will impact on young people.”
Councillor Paul Findlow, Cabinet member for children and families, said: “The views of young people are very important to us. Without their feedback and suggestions we will not be able to design effective services and facilities to meet their needs in the future.”
The survey will close on May 7th.
The Youth Mayor also welcomes invitations to youth and child-related events held by organisations in Cheshire East. However, he may be unable to attend events during school hours in term-time. Please email if you would like to invite the Youth Mayor to your event.
