Vice-Chair Aled Brewerton has resigned from Handforth Parish Council, which means there are now two vacancies in the West Ward.

Mr Brewerton sent a resignation letter to the Cheshire East Monitoring Officer on 14th March. However "receipt of notice" as per section 84 of the Local Government Act 1972 (below) to the Chairman of the Parish Council only took effect on 23rd April.

He gave no reason for his resignation.

Mr Brewerton's resignation comes a few months after the infamous Handforth Parish Council Zoom meeting went viral, after it descended into chaos with members trading insults and removing each other from the call.

Millions of people viewed clips of the meeting on December 10th 2020, which showed Aled Brewerton shouting "Read the standing orders. Read them and understand them" to the acting clerk Jackie Weaver.

Since the chaotic meeting went viral Aled Brewerton, along with Councillor Barry Burkhill, has not attended any Handforth Parish Council meetings.

As reported earlier this week, Councillor Brian Tolver has resigned from his position as Chair but will continue to represent the South Ward on Cheshire East Council.

This latest vacancy may be filled by co-option or by election, the latter taking place if 10 electors of the Parish give notice to the Returning Office within 14 days of the Notice.

The vacancy will be filled by election if, within fourteen days (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays) from Wednesday 28th April, any ten voters submit a written request for an election to the Returning Officer.

If this happens there will be a period of time for candidates to be nominated and if two or more candidates are nominated there will be an election.

If no such request is made, the vacancy will be filled by Handforth Parish Council, who will be at liberty to select who they wish, provided the person qualifies to be a councillor.

Any request for an election to be held to fill the vacancy must be in writing and sent to The Returning Officer, Cheshire East Borough Council, Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, CW11 1HZ.

The first vacancy to represent the West Ward on Handforth Parish Council will be filled by a local election on Thursday, 6th May.

Be great to have people who dont think there better than everybody else just because they have a bit of status.
