Council plans to scrap free wheelie bins

bins

Cheshire East Council is consulting on proposals to introduce charges for new and replacement waste bins.

The Council currently spends £300,000 per year on providing new and replacement waste bins, plus £60,000 delivery costs.

In order to save this £360,000 a year they are proposing to implement a bin supply charge for this service. The charge will not apply where it can be shown that their refuse collectors have caused the damage.

Cheshire East Council is proposing to charge £30 for green and silver recycling bins and £35 for standard black bins. They are also proposing to put addresses on the bins, to help discourage theft.

The consultation can be completed online from today, Tuesday 13th March.

All consultation responses must be received by 21st May 2018.

Basic maths would suggest 10,000 new bins a year. That seems a ridiculous number across CEC. Who's having a laugh at our expense? (i.e. CEC data or people requesting so many bins...)

So will they replace any existing faulty bins first? Presumably we paid for them originally from our council tax and some (especially the silver bins) are already falling apart because the plastic is brittle so can't stand being handled by the tipping mechanism. Did CEC specify a lifetime requirement when they bought the bins? if so, they should be challenging the suppliers, before asking us to buy new ones. Another CEC failure - can't even buy a bin that lasts! Here's a thought, surely the developers currently destroying our green spaces with new houses must be made to provide essential recycling bins for each house? Seems reasonable to me. Just need our brave council to approach the developers. It would only be £100 per house for 3 bins.

The council would much rather inconvenience the general public to save relatively small sums of money than address the vast amounts of money they squander on vanity projects and undeserved pay offs.

Julian, reference to your squandering observation, how about, as a first call, unwarranted "gardening leave" to be dispensed with forthwith. Let those individuals tend to their own gardens at their own expense! Saving of tens of thousands per year.
And this is for starters.

You are so right Rick..Just had 2 grey bins replaced, due to the lids smashed by the collectors.Took 2 months to get them.I did comment to Ches.East they were of poor quality compared with green and black bins.I would suggest readers take photos of any damage ,as then replacements are free. Baz

I dread when stupid CEC start to recycle plastic properly; doubt we’ll see our bins again!

So let me get this right CEC want to charge us for a replacement bins if they are broken.
I only use mine for my recyclable waste and nothing else and it has 2 cracks in the side. The only people that abuse them are the people the council get to collect them !
It may be just a coincidence but why have they decided to start charging as these bins are coming to the end of their life and will need replacing as a matter of course.

Isn't this just a load of old rubbish? Yes, pun intended!

There are some cretinous individuals out there who do actually STEAL wheelie bins, believe it or not! For what inane purpose, I have yet to discover (although I wonder if it is a knock on effect of stealing mine to replace their stolen bin...) so a charge will disadvantage those of us who cannot afford (on a pension) to replace.
Addresses - good idea; padlock anchorages - better idea (just remember to unlock on collection day!); BOTH - brilliant!

They can easily raise more revenue by fining those owners that leave their bins on the pavement instead of on the edge of their property as mandated on the council website.

If they charge for (sell) silver bins they could be reported to the council trading standards as they are grey not silver!

Perhaps the council should address the cost of repeat visits to empty bins that are not accessible due to the dangerous situation of commuter cars parking on corners or blocking narrow roads. I've attempted to contact the local councillor on these issues without any response. Cheshire East told me to ring the police and get the offenders ticketed. I'm sure they are working on the fabled "integrated transport solution" successive governments have promised? Or they could just raise the Council Tax by 6% next year to cover the shortcomings.

Yes I contacted Gary Barton about parking on my road we often miss bin collections due to cars blocking the road and Dungeon Walk is blocked for pushchairs most of the time. It’s over a year later and nothing has happened.

I dont see how legally they can do this? I put my bin out before i go to work at 07.00 in the morning, and it comes back in when i return from work after 18.00. I cant control it while its out on the street, if someone nicks it (which has happened) how can i be held accountable for that? And what happens when the bin men dump it half way up the street from my house, (which they regularly do for some reason) Perhaps they are going to put GPS devices in each one, so we can track it to the thief?? Utter nonsense as usual from this council, i wish we could bin them. (pun intended) PS, its been out for 3 days this week, nobody's come to collect it yet, anybody would think its brain surgery. Its not, its emptying bins, easy!
