Youngsters’ winning design to play starring role in Tour of Britain

An artistic youngster from Wilmslow will play a starring role in the Tour of Britain after designing the winner's jersey for Stage Three of the prestigious cycling event.

Having started in Glasgow on Sunday, 4th September, the tour heads to Cheshire East for Stage Three on Tuesday, 6th September.

Over recent weeks, children from across the area were tasked with putting pen to paper and designing eye-catching designs which could be transferred on to a flag, jersey and trophy.

Seven-year-old Ava Chaplin was inspired to design the jersey after her dad Gary organised and completed a charity bike ride, cycling the height of Mount Everest up the Cat n Fiddle in aid of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

Ava's colourful design will be printed on to the jersey which she will present to the winner of Stage Three at the finish line in Tatton Park.

Nantwich Primary Academy pupil Vanessa, aged 8, was chosen as the lucky winner of the flag competition and will have the honour of her design being used to wave the cyclists over the finish line.

Meanwhile 10-year-old Charlotte Ward of Astbury, designed the trophy which will be handed to the winner of the Cheshire leg.

The winning designs will be seen by the millions of people worldwide, who will be tuning in to watch the race, as well as thousands of spectators who will line the streets to witness this prestigious event, which will see riders cycle 111 miles between Congleton and Tatton Park.

All winners and runners-up also received a family pass to Tatton Park.

Councillor David Brown, Deputy Leader of Cheshire East Council, said: "We received many fantastic entries for the competitions and I'd like to pass on my congratulations to the youngsters whose designs were chosen and all who took part.

"The high standard of the entries received further highlights just how much young talent we have here in the Borough and, with the spotlight on Cheshire East on September 6, it's a great opportunity to show that off to a worldwide audience."
