Following an accident on the A34 Wilmslow bypass the footbridge near Wilmslow High School is closed.

On Thursday, 9th June, a heavy goods vehicle failed to properly navigate the A34 roundabout outside the school crashing into the footbridge leading to the school from Leaside Way. Fortunately no one was hurt in the incident.

A spokesperson for the school said "We have been advised the footbridge will be closed to pedestrian traffic for some days, or even weeks for structural surveys to assess the damage caused and to allow replacement of buckled safety railings.

"There is, therefore, no safe crossing point for pedestrians to the eastern side of the school at this point."

Police closed the A34 between Wilmslow High School and the Ford garage later that morning whilst the lorry was removed.

I saw two WHS Students last night trying to cross this road last night, and through no fault of their own, it was reminiscent of ' The Dearhunter ' Russian Roulette scene, as youngsters, were trying to judge the speed of vehicles to get safe passage. Come on CEC you can do better than this...

Cheshire East Highways are being arrogantly negligent in its care & responsibility to the WHS pupils. Heaven forbid there should be a nasty accident as a result of Highways uncaring response to safeguard the children. This is yet another example of this authority's total lack of highway responsibility
Here is yet a further example of this Authority's lack of care for children crossing Varden bridge on Adlington Road.
Criminal charges of negligence could follow should there be horrific accidents at either place.

There's another footbridge all of about 150m away. I'm sure that between the parents and the school someone could tell them to use that one.

Jon Armstrong; I believe that both the parents and the teachers have probably done exactly what you suggest. However, do children do what they are told "ALL" of the time? Even adults don't do that!

My point was I hardly thing it is "arrogantly negligent" or "uncaring" or "criminal" to expect them to use a bridge 150m away for a short time as the result of a serious and unexpected event.
