Symphony Orchestra to perform special Christmas concert

Edward Gregson 2

Everyone who was at our last year's Christmas Concert agreed that it had a special atmosphere, with fairy lights decorating the music stands and the Evans Theatre glowing magically with Christmas trees. This year once again you can join us in Christmas carols, expertly arranged by our clarinettist Geoff Thomason, with an extra item from our principal trombone Gareth Brown.

Christmas favourites such as The Snowman mingle with popular favourites and colourful orchestral showpieces, as we follow the river Vltava from its high mountain springs through forests and rapids, and sail with Siegfried down the Rhine.

You don't get to hear a Tuba Concerto in every concert, but tonight RNCM Emeritus Professor Edward Gregson, who we are honoured to have as our President, celebrates his 70th birthday by conducting his own Tuba Concerto. RNCM graduate Paul Hughes is the soloist.

For the other items we are delighted to welcome back conductor Marco Belassi, and to welcome Ted Tanner, a student at Wilmslow High School, as treble soloist in The Snowman, which also features WSO violist Lucy Natrass as narrator.

As always, the concert will be in the Evans Theatre in Wilmslow Leisure Centre - which means free parking, good disabled access, and a good view for the audience.
The concert takes place at 7.45 pm on Saturday 5th December. Tickets cost £12 (concessions £10) and can be bought at the door, or through the ticket hotline on 01925 756144, or through the Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra website, or at Bang & Olufsen in Wilmslow.

This was a super concert, with a nice mix of traditional and contemporary. The Snowman was lovely, the narration and singing really conjured up the scenes. We Wish You a Merry Christmas - jazzed up, was great fun.

Thank you.
