Wartime voices to be heard again

A unique evening of World War One readings based on the writings and memories of people from in and around Wilmslow a century ago can be heard again at 8pm on Armistice Day. Wednesday, November 11th (Armistice Day).

On Wednesday, 11th November, Wilmslow United Reformed Church will host 'A Patchwork of Voices', a compilation of diary extracts, letters, poems, articles and interviews about the war which were put together last year by Wilmslow Green Room.

Derek Torrington said "'A Patchwork of Voices' echoes life in the trenches and much about life on the home front in Cheshire during the dark days of family separation and anxiety, while some readings reflect people's hopes for a resolution of the war. It offers a powerful insight into what people in this community thought and felt about events 100 years ago.

"Those wishing to experience this fascinating and deeply moving evening of remembrance can come to Wilmslow United Reformed Church, Alderley Road, at 8pm on November 11th, with a donation on the door to Combat Stress, a veterans' mental health charity."

Performances of the piece involve two narrators and four readers with some communal singing of wartime melodies. It was premiered last autumn, in collaboration with Cheshire East Libraries, and extracts have also featured at a Wilmslow High School event.
