Poppy Appeal gets off to a great start

As many of you will have noticed, giant poppies have been tied to lamp posts around the town centre in the run up to Remembrance Day.

Wilmslow Town Council purchased 100 of the Event Poppies which were tied to the lamp posts this week by Stuart Redgard, a volunteer for the Wilmslow Poppy appeal, and members of the congregation of Form Life Church Wilmslow.

Ten large poppies have also been put up on Chapel Lane, funded by Chapel Lane Businesses Group and forty are being put up in Styal, funded by Styal Village Council.

Kate Hewison, co-ordinator of the Wilmslow Poppy Appeal, has received lots of positive comments about the poppies that have put up on the lampposts.

She said "A couple of local residents and independent businesses in Wilmslow have contacted us to enquire about having one or two poppies near their houses or business, having been inspired by the poppies that have seen around town over the past few days.

"After your great report a few weeks ago, we had several new volunteers and as a result of this, I was invited to do a short presentation at Wilmslow Business Group last week. The Alderley Edge Traders liked the sound of the large poppies and asked for some, as did the Chapel Lane businesses. We showed an ex-Styal village councillor the poppies in Wilmslow and he approached Styal Village Council, who then asked for 40."

Kate added "We have had several texts and emails from local residents and business to say how fantastic the poppies look and some of the volunteers have said how proud they feel this year, having the large poppies to highlight the Appeal.

"Additionally, we have been contacted by a few businesses who have not previously had a poppy box in their office, asking if one could be delivered. Some businesses asking for an extra box!"

Additional poppies, which the Royal British Legion have purchased, are also being tied to the lamp posts on Grove Avenue, Church Street and Mill Street next week so the route of the Remebrance Day Parade is also covered.

Kate explained "We do not have any further donations committed so far, however as we would love to have Event Poppies along the route of the Remembrance Parade, we have provided the poppies, in the hope that other local businesses or schools will come forward to make a donation in exchange for having some poppies placed near their buildings."

In total volunteers have delivered nearly 450 poppy boxes to businesses located in and around the town, which is more boxes than ever before.

Kate said "Thanks must also go to everyone who helped prepare the boxes for delivery and to everyone who has offered to man one of the poppy stalls at Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

"If anyone can spare two hours during the appeal to man one of the stalls, we would be really grateful. Please do email Khumi on contact her on 01625 548 664."

This year, once again, the Air Cadets and Army Cadets will be doing street collections and the girl guides will be doing a bag pack at Waitrose in support of the Poppy Appeal.

In support of the Wilmslow Poppy Appeal, Stuart Redgard is also volunteering to tidy up people's gardens in return for a donation to the Poppy Appeal.

He said " I am an official collector and have all the relevant paper work and a donation box, which you can put in the donation - Suggested donation of between £5 to £7 for each hour I volunteer." Stuart can be contacted via email.
