MP George Osborne was in Handforth to meet a local pharmacist and regional finalist in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's annual search for Britain's best loved pharmacist.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer met Mahraz Nickkho-Amiry, 27, from Well Pharmacy on Friday, 18th September, to recognise his achievement in getting this far in the 'I Love My Pharmacist' competition.
Mahraz said "I am delighted that George Osbourne Osborne MP attended Well Pharmacy today, to visit me and congratulate me on being a regional pharmacist in the national 'I Love My Pharmacist' competition hosted by Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
"It's an honour that I was able to meet him and talk him through the role of pharmacists as an integral part of every local health service, and it is really important to illustrate this to the public.
"We are more than just dispensers, we support patients in different settings, advise on health issues and build good relationships with other health professionals, including GPs, nurses and hospital staff, which is important. I appreciate all the support I have received so far from being in this competition."
Mahraz, who used to work as a locum, took over as the manager at Well Pharmacy in June and has been selected as an I Love My Pharmacist regional finalist based on the impact of one particular instance showcasing his dedication to patient care.
One of the pharmacy's patients was collecting a repeat prescription when Mahraz noticed something unusual. Following a sensitive enquiry Mahraz discovered the patient, an elderly gentleman, was at that time a victim of domestic abuse. After providing support and assistance Mahraz was able to speak to family members and social services to help all involved in the situation.
The 90 year old patient said: "Mahraz was exceptionally helpful. He went out of his way to help me when he was very busy, and I appreciate it very much. He was not just a pharmacist but also my friend."
Mahraz has also helped set up the 'Think Pharmacy' initiative in the local health centre and offers minor ailment treatment and emergency contraception. He also offers sports consultations as he was previously a personal trainer and rugby league player in Yorkshire and Cheshire.
George Osborne said: "Mahraz has gone above and beyond to help local people and really deserves this nomination. Pharmacists provide a crucial service in our community and it is absolutely right to recognise this through the I Love My Pharmacist awards. You can support our local pharmacist too by voting at www.ilovemypharmacist.co.uk."
