A double first for St Barts

St Bartholomew's Church is celebrating a double first this week.

Following months of fundraising concerts and recitals, the church has appointed its first choral and organ scholar. In addition, the hard work put in by the church to raise over £3000 has been matched by a very generous donation of £3000 from the Pilling Trust. The Trust was set up in 1957 by John and Margaret Pilling, principally for the purpose of assisting Anglican churches to maintain good music in their services.

Organist Philip Underwood said "Pilling Trust Choral Scholar Isabel Patterson, aged 17 from Wilmslow, has already made her mark with her moving performance of the Pie Jesu from Faure's Requiem during the service in church on Remembrance Sunday."

Isabel is a pupil at Alderley Edge School for Girls, in addition to singing she also plays the piano.

Philip added "David Percival Organ Scholar George Herbert, aged 13 from Styal, has impressed everyone with his accompaniment of the choir in works by Haydn, Howard Goodall and John Rutter."

George is a pupil at Chetham's School of Music where he studies trumpet, piano and organ. George spent four years as a Chorister at Manchester Cathedral.

The organ scholarship for the academic year 2014-15 has been very generously funded by Betty Percival (who worships at St Anne's Church in Fulshaw) and her family in memory of Betty's husband David a life long pipe organ devotee.

Further scholarships are available so if you would like more information and an application form contact organist email Philip Underwood or call 0161 456 9037.

The choir is busy preparing for the forthcoming Christmas period but is always happy to see new faces. They rehearse in the church on Thursday's from 8.30-9.30pm.
