Organisers of the Wilmslow Poppy Appeal have made "an amazing start" to this year's appeal having already submitted over £14,000.

The donations so far have largely come from the poppy stalls located in Waitrose and Sainsburys as well as a collection by the 23rd Detachment Army Cadets which raised over £1000 and a collection by 391 Squadron Air Cadets raised over £1600.

Ex-Marine, Geoff Davies-Pallin raised over £160 by static-rowing from Dover to Calais - replicating the distance of D-Day landings - and bag packing by Wilmslow 5th Cubs and Girl Guides raised £160 and £500. In addition there have been donations for wreaths and a few personal donations.

Kate Hewison, Wilmslow Poppy Appeal Organiser, said "This year more volunteers than ever have helped us."

She added "The Poppy Appeal doesn't end when we take the stalls down from Waitrose & Sainsbury's – for approximately the next two weeks an army of poppy pals spring into action – collecting up the 400+ boxes from local businesses, we have cash counting teams, 'thank- you letter' writing teams and finally the sorting out, replenishing and storing of the poppy boxes and tins .... by then it will probably be after Christmas!!"

We will let you know the final amount as soon as all the collections have been counted up.
