Handforth Station flies the flag for WW1 centenary

HANDFORTHFLAG

Friends of Handforth Station have teamed up with St Benedict's Catholic Primary School to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Year 6 pupils, Angelo Garcia, William Townsend, Mia Lasker Crilly, Amelie Davey and Weronika Prusak worked with their class to design a flag which incorporates a poppy and a dove - to signify remembrance and reconciliation.

The children have also written imaginative and reflective poems which are displayed on the station platform and within the ticket office.

Mike Bishop, Chair of the Friends of Handforth Station, said "This flag, now flying at the station, and the reflective poems are an exciting start to a series of planned displays leading up to a performance of "Over by Christmas". Theatre in the Quarter, one of Cheshire's leading professional theatre companies, will perform a thirty-minute commemoration of the First World War with words and music performed by choir, musicians and actors at Handforth station on 13 September 2014 .

"We hope to involve the Handforth community in the day in order to present a truly memorable event. We will publicise details nearer the time."
