App helps track down charity shop burglar

Last month police officers were called to a charity shop on Grove Street because a male had stolen shop workers hand bags containing phones and cash from the staff room.

Several officers were deployed to the area to search for the male with limited information, fortunately one of the victims had an app on their phone that enabled them to track their device. Officers utilized this and tracked the male to a car park off Chapel Lane.

After a short foot foot chase through the town centre the male was detained, his vehicle seized as it was used in crime and he has now been charged with burglary. The victims had all of their belongings returned to them.

Inspector Sue Mills said "If you have a modern smart phone take the time out to check that you have your missing device settings set up correctly, it may assist in the recovery of your phone if it is ever lost or stolen."

On Thursday, 27th March, a young male was spotted by members of the public interfering with a bicycle outside Wilmslow Station. Shortly after officers arrived they located the male and some stolen property, after he had forced his way into a secure storage unit.

The male aged 16 and from the Stockport area was subsequently arrested for several offences, including theft of a bicycle and theft from a motor vehicle. He is currently on bail for these offences.

Inspector Sue Mills said "If you see or hear any suspicious activity we would appreciate a call to 101 or 999 in an emergency so that we can react promptly to any suspicious behaviour. If you have any information that you would prefer to pass in confidence then you can call Crimestoppers which is a registered charity on 0800 555 111."
