St Bartholomew's Church are hosting an evening of big band music organised by the Mary Wood Trust.
Featuring Fish Lip Soup, the concert on Saturday, 22nd March, is in aid of Nyakabungo Girls Secondary School in Uganda.
The Mary Wood Trust, which was formed about 12 years ago in Skipton Yorkshire, is currently chaired by Wilmslow resident Clare Ramsden, daughter of Mary Wood who died 5 years ago.
The charity supports girls education in the Diocese of Kinkiizi in south west Uganda and has carried out various fund raising efforts in Wilmslow. The most recent of which was a cake sale in November, which raised money to provide to buy soap, deodorant and other personal items for the girls at the school, items that we buy routinely but that they regard as luxuries.
Clare Ramsden said "The funds raised from the concert will go towards completing the furnishing of a new staff house for female teachers at the school. It has proved hard to recruit female teachers, because of the lack of suitable accommodation in this remote area of Uganda, but there is seen to be a real need for more female teachers in an all-girls school.
"The project was started about 3 years ago and the funds from this concert should allow the work to be finished."
Fish Lip Soup is a big band that meets at Wilmslow Conservative Club and performs regularly in the area, mainly for charity events. Their repertoire includes classic big band pieces and arrangements by, for example Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Henry Mancini, with some more modern items.
Clare added "This will be the first major event to be held at St Bartholomew's Church since a re-ordering of the interior was carried out in 2013. This included removing the old pews and replacing with movable benches, installing under floor heating and cleaning all the interior stone work."
The event will start at 7.30pm on Saturday, 22nd March. Tickets are £10 for adults and £8 for children and include a drink and nibbles. Call 01625 531233 or 01625 523812 for tickets.
