Wilmslow Town Council agreed at their meeting this week that Altrincham Road and Styal Road should be the next priorities in terms of trying to address problems with speeding.
Councillors decided to ask the Wilmslow Local Area Partnership (LAP) sub-group, which has been looking at speeding issues around Wilmslow and particularly Morley Green Road, to focus on these two main routes into the town.
The mobile speed indicator device (SID) was placed on seven roads around the town last year, including Morley Green Road, Styal Road, Handforth Road, Altrincham Road, Knutsford Road, Manchester Road and Broad Walk.
The data collected showed that the 30 mph limit was exceeded by a greater percentage on Morley Green Road than anywhere else monitored by the SID. As a result this road was flagged as a priority and, as we reported earlier this month, funding has now been secured for two flashing speed indication / warning signs to be located at either end of Morley Green Road, at a cost of £15,000.
The average speed recorded on Morley Green Road was 35.9 mph, whilst on Styal Road it was 33.7mph and on Altrincham Road it was 32.1 mph.
The number of drivers travelling at at least 10 mph over the speed limit was 27.2% on Morley Green Road, 12.7% on Altrincham Road and 11.7% on Styal Road.
The police and Town Council also carried out an experiment on Altrincham Road where the display screen was turned off, so it looked like the SID was not working. However, it was still recording speeds and the data collected showed that when the display was turned off the average speed was 2.1mph higher (34.2mph) than when it was turned on and that the percentage of vehicles travelling more than 10mph over the 30mph speed limit rose from 12.7% to 17.9%.
