New club is something to laugh about

A new comedy club is launching which intends to bring the very best live stand up comedy from around the UK and abroad to Wilmslow.

Giggle Street Comedy is the brainchild of John Kilroe, 51, who has lived at his home in Wilmslow since he married Lesley in 1984.

John is planning to organise two shows a month at the Evans Theatre, which boasts a large stage with great sound and lighting, theatre style and table seating as well as a licensed bar.

John told wilmslow.co.uk "I have never put anything on like this before but I love comedy and Wilmslow and I just had a desire to do something a little different.

"I had an idea that I could help put a bit of fizz back into Wilmslow building on the hard work by the organisers of things like the Artisan Market, Scarecrow Festival and Motor Show."

He added "The Evans Theatre is a great facility for the people of Wilmslow right in the centre of town and the theatre can hold up to around 500 people.

"If all goes well I am looking to put on an over 18 show on a Friday or Saturday evening and a kids comedy show on a Saturday afternoon every month, bringing the best talent from around the country."

The first evening of comedy will be held on Friday 21st September with three acts and resident compere Bethany Black.

Sam Gore who is opening the show has made numerous appearances on TV and is the winner of several awards. He will be followed by Adam Hess, who was the winner of Chortle Student of the Year Comp 2011 and John believes is destined to be a big star.

The final act is Tony Burgess, a regular fixture on the Manchester comedy scene. Tony won the prestigious City Life Comedian of the Year and came runner up in So You Think You're Funny. He has toured with Johnny Vegas and Jenny Éclair and appeared on TV with Johnny Vegas in the cult show 'Ideal'.

This will be followed by an afternoon of comedy for 6-12 year olds on Saturday 22nd September with international kids comics Ian Billings and support act Martin 'Bigpig' Mor. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets for the adult show on Friday 21st September priced £14, and for the children's show, priced £9, are now available from www.wegottickets.com.

The adult's show will start at 8pm and the children's show will start at 3pm. For further information visit the Giggle Street Comedy website.

Update 10th September: The kids comedy show has been postponed as it coincides with the Wilmslow Motor Show. The intention is to continue with the October kids show.

This is excellent well done John. It is yet another example of what you can do in this town, if you really want to and are motivated - it tells a good story & thanks for asking me to design your logo, which was great fun. Your comedy club, like our fab Orchestra deserves a fabulous, aspirational theatre/media zone, somewhere which will pull in the crowds from outside the town as well as locals - and I know I've said it before, but we do have a lot to offer - peoples skills and innovation being high up there in the running. Good luck - great formula.
