Wilmslow Town Council have voted in favour of holding their first Civic Service next year.

Speaking at Monday's Town Council meeting, Town Clerk Matthew Jackson explained "A Civic Service creates a sense of pride, is a celebration of the town and helps to build relationships with other towns around us."

The Town Council are looking to hold the Civic Service on Sunday January 29th and have allocated a budget of £500 to fund the event.

Cllr Keith Purdom raised his concerns about the service, saying "I understand the motivation but what's in it for the people who voted us to be here. I'm nervous this might be perceived as a jolly for the council."

Vice-Chair Ruth McNulty responded "I wouldn't be nervous of seeing this as a frivolous occasion it is a reminder of the work we're doing for the good of the community."

Cllr Martin Watkins said "My experience is the council will go out to the community involving them in this particular service. I've seen it done and it packs the church every time."

Town Clerk Matthew Jackson added "It would be normal practise for the Town Council to create a civic invitation list. The Council on behalf of the town will be thanking these people for their contribution to Wilmslow. The Town Council is acting on behalf of the town to recognise the contribution being made by these people to the town."
