136 mile run beats PC Lee Spencer

A local police officer may have failed in his challenge to run to all 18 police stations in Cheshire but so far he has raised £1200 for his chosen charity.

PC Lee Spencer, 40, set himself the challenge of completing 136 miles within 24 hours to raise funds for BLESMA, a national charity which supports limbless soldiers and their families.

He set off from Wilmslow Police Station at midday on Wednesday 27th July but unfortunately collapsed in Winsford after running 52 miles and was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital where he spent two days on an intravenous drip.

Lee told me "I did my best and carried on running until I collapsed. I set out with the goals of raising awareness of BLESMA and completing 136 miles, I achieved one of those."

Having completed the equivalent of 2 marathons, Lee has raised £1200 so far, and the money is still coming in.

Lee decided to take on this challenge to raise awareness and funds for the BLESMA because it has provided tremendous support to his nephew, Jason Jameson, who fell victim to an IED in Afghanistan. As a result Jason, 21, has lost both his legs, digits on his right hand, mobility in his right arm and partial vision in one of his eyes.

Jason spent 7 weeks at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Selly Oak before being discharged and he is now at Headley Court, where he is learning to walk again on his 'new' legs.

Speaking about whether he would try the run again, Lee told me "No, I don't think so. It has taken too much of a toll on me and on my family.

"In future I need to consult with my family before I say I am going to do one of these silly runs."
