A local police officer has set himself the challenge of running to all 18 police stations in Cheshire to raise funds for limbless soldiers and their families.
PC Lee Spencer, 40, will set off from Wilmslow at midday on Wednesday 27th July to complete the 136 mile run within 24 hours.
He will be joined on route by quite a few of his colleagues along the way and several members of his family, as he completes his physical challenge to raise money for BLESMA, a national charity which supports limbless serving and ex service men and women, along with their dependants and widows.
Lee Spencer explained "I am also intending to raise much needed funds for the charities whom look after our injured armed service personnel. They have been a godsend to my family in recent weeks, as we have unfortunately had to use their services, after a nephew, Jason Jameson, fell victim of an IED in Afghanistan.
"I intend on setting off at mid day, with hopefully lots of supporters to cheer me on my way, and a few to pace me along the way. I have scheduled a small break at each station, for photo's, food and repair work. There will be crew with me showing me the way, at all times and bringing me back to Wilmslow on Thursday 28th July at around mid day, tired, hungry and I'm sure full of aches and pains."
Lee's reason for completing this challenge is his 21 year old nephew Jason, who is in the Army and was posted to Afghanistan days before his 21st birthday. Unfortunately he fell victim to a IED, intended for a vehicle in December 2010. Quick thinking field medics saved his life, stabilising his condition enough for surgery in Afghanistan, he then flew to the UK where he was treated for his horrific injuries. Jason has lost both his legs, digits on his right hand, mobility in his right arm and partial vision in one of his eyes.
Lee said "After a week of operations, Jason was brought out of his coma, to start his recovery, and throughout it all Jason has remained positive and his attitude makes you feel most humble. It's a word that you may hear a million times, but to me and to his family and friends, Jason is a true Hero, and anything I can do to make his life a little better, I will, moving heaven and Earth if I need to."
Jason spent 7 weeks at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Selly Oak before being discharged and he is now at Headley Court, where he is learning to walk again on his 'new' legs.
Lee is hoping to raise £1000 for BLESMA, which needs to raise nearly £2 million a year to adequately meet all its objectives.
