Fire crews have spent the night bringing a fire under control at a three-storey Victorian mansion on Stanneylands Road.
Five fire engines, from Wilmslow, Poynton, Macclesfield, Knutsford and Bollington, were called to the blaze in Langley House at midnight last night.
Four water jets were used to tackle the blaze from the outside and a team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus later entered the property to check for hotspots.
The Environment Protection Unit was called in case of water run-off entering drains or local water courses and the Welfare Unit was brought in to provide rest facilities for firefighters.
A relief crew remained in attendance all night to ensure the fire did not re-ignite.
Langley House stood within seven acres of land in Styal and was built in 1868. Most recently it was used as offices and purchased in June 2006 for £2.1m.
A planning application, submitted in January 2010, to demolish the detached property and replace it with a 53 bed residential care home was later withdrawn.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
