Concert marks a 40 year old coincidence

In 1971 two organisations happened to be founded in the same year – St Ann's Hospice and the Laurence Singers.

During the past 40 years the Laurence Singers, a registered charity based in Cheadle Hulme, have supported the Hospice, as well as other worthwhile causes, to the tune of over £10,000 from funds raised at their concerts.

This year to celebrate the anniversary of these two organisations the Laurence Singers are holding a 40th Anniversary Concert in aid of St Ann's Hospice at Wilmslow United Reformed Church on Saturday 14th May.

Cliff Crewe, Musical Director the Laurence Singers, said "To mark the special nature of this concert for the Singers the two halves will be quite different.

"Almost two years ago the choir presented a movement from a 'Requiem for George Butterworth' written by Roger Shelmerdine, a local composer living in Altrincham. This movement was very well received at that concert and since then Roger has completed the Requiem and dedicated it to the Laurence Singers. It was recorded professionally in March (with a view to being broadcast on radio), and will have its premiere at the concert on May 14th.

"The second half will be completely different featuring musical items the Singers have presented in the last 40 years. Choosing items from 40 years for a 40 minute half has been a challenge to say the least, and the programme includes Verdi's 'Speed Your Journey' from 'Nabucco', the Hallelujah Chorus, Tea for Two, The Way we were and The way you look tonight.

"It promises to be a great evening of music of different kinds for a most worthwhile charity which we hope attracts a lot of support."

The concert commences at 7.30pm and tiickets (£8 and £7 concessions) are available by ringing either 0161 432 2539 or 0161 439 4293.
