New police priorities set for Wilmslow South

Matt Welsted 3

The following priorities have been set by Inspector Matt Welsted having considered the information held on police systems and the results of various public engagements throughout August in the Wilmslow South Area.

• In response to concerns from local residents we are actively looking at way to target people involved in the sale and use of illegal drugs in and around the Lacey Green area.

• To increase public reassurance through visible patrols of the night time economy in the centre of Wilmslow. These patrols have been requested between 9pm and 2am Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays. The focus of these patrols is to reduce antisocial behaviour, alcohol related crime and to support local licensees.

• To increase public reassurance through visible patrols in the area of Longmeade Gardens. This has been requested during office hours and is to focus on the prevention of criminal damage to motor vehicles.

• To increase public reassurance through visible foot patrols and partnership working in The Carrs park, Wilmslow. This has been requested during daylight hours everyday of the week. The focus of these patrols is to address concerns about dogs being out of control in this area and worrying other park users.

During August Wilmslow officers and colleagues from the Special Constabulary and headquarters units have been working together to support licensees in the Wilmslow South area in reducing violent crimes.

This piece of work has been called Operation Muskrat and has been run twice in the past month. The visible use of police officers to patrol and police the roads of the Town centre has proven effective at stopping travelling criminals from coming to Wilmslow and causing problems. In August only two assaults were reported in the town centre of Wilmslow, one of which was a girl who had her hair pulled, the other was reported by the victims who then refused to provide any further details.

The police have also been concerned about the rumours that people are dealing drugs on the Lacey Green estate and whilst it is obviously not appropriate to go into detail on this website intelligence is being developed with a view to police officers and partner agencies working together to tackle any persons possessing or dealing in illegal substances.

Another specific issue the police have been addressing is why so many vehicles are being damaged in Longmeade Gardens. Wilmslow officers have reviewed every reported case of criminal damage in this street and are in the process of exploring their options to investigate these offences further. Officers have been visible in this area throughout August and since setting this priority no further incidents of damage have been reported to them but it is their intention to continue working on this issue in September.

Residents are being encouraged to let the police know what matters to you by reporting crimes and anti-social behaviour, going along to your next pledge meeting, volunteering to become a Special Constable or Police Support Volunteer or emailing your views to [email protected].
