School crops under guard

With so much open land and trees at Pownall Hall School the new vegetable garden could have become a haven for the local hungry wildlife, but not any more.

This year Pownall Hall School has installed new raised vegetable beds, with the support of the Parents Association. A variety of vegetables, fruit and herbs are being grown so that children can see and investigate where our food comes from. They can even sample the finished product.

Mr Jonathan Hall, Headmaster said "Even the youngest children have been involved in planting out seeds and plants, with the older children taking more responsibility for the watering and weeding. It is all part of a childs education and links into their science lessons as well as other subjects including art and design."

Art teacher, Mrs Henning Lee, said "The children were so excited by the new vegetable beds and they thought the scarecrows were needed to keep the birds from eating the young shoots.

"All the children have had an opportunity to create their own scarecrow. We are going to take the best creations to the Wilmslow show, but they will be back afterwards to continue their guard duty."
