George Herbert, of Pownall Hall School in Wilmslow, has gained a choristership to Chetham’s School of Music starting in September 2010.

During his time at the school, as well as receiving academic and music tuition at the highest level, nine-year-old George will be one of the sixteen choristers of the Manchester Cathedral Choir and will study trumpet as his main instrument.

George’s love of music has always been nurtured by Pownall Hall School where he receives singing, piano and trumpet lessons.

Kate Oldfield, his singing and piano teacher is delighted with his achievement and said: "George thoroughly deserves this opportunity to develop his musical studies. I am sad to lose such an inspiring and talented pupil and I shall miss his enthusiasm and hunger for a challenge. I wish him every success and happiness in his new venture."

Pownall Hall’s Headmaster, Mr Jonathan Hall said: "Music plays a very important role in our school and throughout school life. We shall miss George at Pownall Hall but we are all thrilled for him to have this opportunity and look forward to hearing great things about him in the future."

Chetham’s is the largest specialist music school in the UK situated in the centre of Manchester, and welcomes students from many different backgrounds.
