Plea for Wilmslow High School to help crackdown on ‘persistent, calculated fare evasion’ by students

Northern has written to the headteachers of eleven secondary schools and academies across the North of England, including Wilmslow High School, with a plea to help them tackle what they call 'persistent, calculated fare evasion' by students.

As the end of the academic year draws near, the train operator says it's time for headteachers to work with them to combat the issue.

It follows a catalogue of incidents since September 2023, including students travelling without tickets, ticket fraud and anti-social behaviour as well as verbal and physical assaults on conductors and station staff.

Behaviour at some stations has been so bad that Northern has had to request support from British Transport Police to maintain order.

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: "What we're seeing is persistent, calculated fare evasion.

"With secondary school students, fare evasion incidents tend to occur on relatively short journeys between rural and suburban stations which are not barrier-controlled.

"That, combined with the limited time conductors have to carry out ticket checks, emboldens students to travel without a ticket."

Amazing.
Northern knows the method by which fares are dodged but cannot make any changes to prevent it happening.

How about students can only travel on the train with a 'season ticket' or pass, which is paid in advance and valid only between their home station and school during term times. This is scanned and validated at the station to allow access to the station platform. No pass = no train.

Seems like the same sort of problem plaguing shops where thieves just walk off with stuff and cannot be apprehended for 'fear' of causing assault or harassment to the shoplifter/thief.

Maybe children is uniform should get free travel to and from school. What happens to a child if his parents cant afford train tickets every day or its a choice between getting a lunchtime meal or walking home. Children need a good education and giving them any excuse to not turn up because they cant get to school should not be one of them. What about winter conditions or rain. Would you expect a child to sit in wet clothes all day or try to get a free train ride . I know what i would have done at their age and that's jump on a train.

Without statistics to indicate the level of specific student / school problem, measured against the number of adults travelling without a ticket during the same travelling periods, it seems against an apparent lack of staff to check tickets of all passengers, this is not representative of the full problem and is an easy allegation to be made without relevant factual disclosure. As other contributors have indicated.. No ticket / No ride.. But if no one is checking ??... I do like the idea that students should be exempt, but that wont happen anytime soon ! even with the new governments plans for re-nationalisation. The rail service is a business and no one should willingly avoid their dues to use it.

Use Smart Water. Once the culprits are identifiable, they will stop.

Interesting idea that fare dodging is the fault of the railway company. Methinks not. Fault of the dodger I reckon.

I have no sympathy for the railway companies bleating about this.

If they genuinely want people to pay to travel on their trains, it is their responsibility to facilitate this. They could achieve it by making sure they only allow people onto trains who have a valid ticket.

I also agree to free student passes between the school station and the given pupils home station.
As someone put here what if they can’t afford the lunch.
Education equals future tax payers who support our country.
But as the new government wishes to nationalize the railway maybe this may come in.
As a student my dad worked for the railway and I had free train travel it opened up my world.
